The plates don't self-repair and don't add any resistances. They're just plates of metal bolted to a ship. Why do they require more power than almost any other module?

So, in a Megathron: - Top speed reduced - MWD able to be deactivated by enemy - Webifier much less effective - No increase to blaster tracking or damage mentioned This seems like a pretty bad situation, but what do I know.

Yes, covert ops is useful for many situations and worth training. Get a covert ops cloak if you can afford it to warp while cloaked. Also, Jonny JoJo has a funny-shaped head.

If it had either a damage or tracking bonus it would be more exciting, but it lacks either. I used it back before the Drake existed but never got good results with turrets on it in missions.

I agree that afterburners need to be much more effective than they currently are and they should be restricted to the proper class of ship. I'd even go farther and double all ship speeds because this game is just too damn slow overall.
